An important target set by the United Nations as part of their Millenium Development Goal in 1990 was to halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water. In lieu of this, the story shows the percentage of population without access to improved water over the years in different parts of the world. It also shows that access to clean water has improved more in the rural areas than the urban areas. A sizeable divide of improved access is also evident among the developing and developed regions.
